Waste Food From Supermarkets Turned Into Power

by David Allen on Friday, January 23rd, 2009

One of the largest supermarket chains in the UK are planning to do something worthwhile with all of the waste food that they end up with at the end of every single day. It has been estimated that just by using the waste food from their stores in Scotland they generate around forty two tonnes of food waste.

If they send this waste to a biomass electric plant that is already in operation in Motherwell each tonne of food waste would produce enough power for five hundred homes, which is far better than it being placed in landfill sites where it would produce methane gases.

Excellent idea! I know there are many more resources wasted, just like this one, but this is a good step ahead. I hope others will join on this too, since these guys practically opened the doors for all other supermarkets out there.
