Fur Coats and Fuzzy Thinking

by Brian Yalung on Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Fur coat fashion

Whenever we hear the use of fur coats, we program our minds to automatically point towards animals killed for the pleasure of providing high-end clothing for stylish individuals in the world today. However, the price to pay for sacrificing animals for the satisfaction of petty want by people should be something that people may want to study once again.

Animals serve more than one purpose and by all means, not all people need fur coats to make a fashion statement. Animals are species that may be losing in numbers. We only have ourselves to blame for it. But here is something that fur-loving individuals may want to check out.

This fuzzy thinking adds up to little more than greenwashing.

The Fur Council’s “consumer reassurance” campaign—that’s what it’s called on their Web site—is nonsense. For starters, furs, like other animal skins, are loaded with caustic, even dangerous, chemicals to prevent them from rotting in the buyer’s closet.

  • Yes, this is a good point. People these days do not want to have chemicals on their body.
And when we are speaking about fur... what about fur of the animals which we eat and also which have fur like rabbits? I do not want to wear any fur or animal skin, but I'm just curious what about this kind of fur, which you get by eating the animal. And not using all the animal after it was once killed would be wasting.
