Your Thoughts On Hemp Food Products?

by Missy on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

As a vegetarian i’m always looking into different nutrition products and ingredients. Hemp is one i have heard of many times, but have only tried a few times. Well let me clarify, industrial hemp which is manufactured into food form.

Hemp (the sativa form) from what i’ve read is a plant known to have wonderful nutrient properties, as it is high in fiber, moderately high in protein, and a good source of Vitamin A and Vitamin D.

Protein – 23 grams

Fiber – 35 grams

Vitamin A – 37 IU

Vitamin D – 10 IU

There are many brands of hemp food items including Nutiva, and many uses for hemp oil and hemp seed. So am wondering the following.

I have tried de-hulled hemp nuts and hemp milk. My favorite brand is Living Harvest (purchase at Whole Foods or on their website - www.livingharvest.com ). I use the dehulled nuts on or in just about anything. Living Harvest has milk in Original (my favorite), Vanilla and Chocolate. It has a nice nutty taste .. just remember to shake well because it separates. I have heard they are going to have an unsweetened version soon too
  • Hi Missy

Just dicovered Keetsa and I have o say that you guys definitely seem like you're set to change the world (one post at a time)!

My client GOOD OIL is a hemp seed culinary oil which is produced in the UK.

Hemp seed oil is an excellent source of two essential fatty acids which our bodies require (plus it also contains omega 9).

As you may know, the correct intake of Omega-6 and Omega-3 is associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease

Compared with other culinary oils hemp seed oil is also low in saturated fatty acids. Current national and international dietary recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular disease recommend decreasing the intake of saturated fatty acids in order to lower blood cholesterol concentrations

If you want to find out more about the nutritional attributes of cold pressed Hemp Seed Oil, a recent study by Professor Tom Sanders and Dr Fiona Lewis of the Nutritional Sciences Division at King’s College, London, UK can be found here:
    GOOD OIL Kings Report

The main take out is probably that even when consumed in small amounts (10ml) per day it will make a substantial contribution to the intake of essential fatty acids which are required for health.

Unfortunately, GOOD OIL isn't available in the States at the moment, but we're interested in hearing about retail/distribution opps in N. America. If you're interested in finding out more about GOOD OIL, leave us a message on our GOOD OIL Facebook Page or visit the GOOD OIL Website

If you’d like to sample some GOOD OIL, then drop me an email and I’ll send you some over to sample.

    Keep up the good work!

    Rax

I plan to get some hemp milk and try it out, also some hemp bars. But i really want to try hemp seeds. I'm thinking of the type i can sprinkle on cereal, oatmeal, or yogurt. Are you in the UK or USA?
