GraniteCrete Your Driveway

by Brian Yalung on Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Depending on design, we see a lot of people trying out some kind of design based on materials used for their home. Some may turn to rocks and stones while others try to rough them up a big. But perhaps this new material made of recycled gypsum can be a proper home design aspect up for consideration. The material has been christened as GraniteCrete.

GraniteCrete is a combination of pre-consumer recycled aggregate, gypsum by-product, fine clays and colorant. It costs 1/3rd less than concrete, and it’s supposed to age better and be less likely to develop cracks. It’s designed to look more like a natural path than other materials such as concrete, brick pavers, and asphalt.

GraniteCrete doesn’t contain any oils, synthetic polymers, emulsions or plastics, and it is made from pre-consumer recycled mining by-product. Also the material is “absolutely porous, addressing storm-water and heat island environmental concerns and yielding high LEED points in up to three categories of the LEED rating system.”

  • Wouldn't being porous cause it more likely to crack in actual use? Plants can get between that and split it like gum drops.
  • Not really. Concrete is also porous and allows water to come through it, but you don't see plants coming out of it. They won't push up unless there is sunlight.
