Home Depot's New Eco-Options An Interesting Take on Green
Home Depot recently made application to be included in its new Eco-Options program, almost 1/3 of its new products applied for inclusion.
However, it’s not as rosy as it sounds.
According to Environmental Reader,
Plastic-handled paint brushes were touted as nature-friendly because they were not made of wood. Wood-handled paint brushes were promoted as better for the planet because they were not made of plastic.
“Most of what you see today in the green movement is voodoo marketing,” said Ron Jarvis, a Home Depot senior vice president who oversees the Eco Options program.
Only 2,500 of the products, including solar-powered landscape lighting, biodegradable peat pots and paints that discharge fewer pollutants, made the cut.
I’m all for companies going green, but to do it with increasing business as the primary incentive is not the way to go. While Home Depot has some great green products — and a lot of other products you can use yourself to go green — reading this article really disappointed me.
