Lipton to Use Sustainable Tea Leaves

by erin on Monday, May 28th, 2007

Lipton’s parent company, Unilever, has just signed a deal to only buy tea from sustainable and ethical sources.

Lipton is expected to be the world’s first certified sustainable tea by the year 2015. They have signed a deal with the Rainforest Alliance to begin the certification process from all their tea buying sources.

Since Unilever controls 12% of the tea buying industry, the impact of this declaration is huge!

Congratulations to Unilever and Lipton on taking such a drastic measure, and appears to be approaching it reasonably and responsibly.
