High School Gets Green (and Gold!) Design
Hoffman, LLC, a green design company from Appleton, Wisconsin, was awarded LEED Gold Standard for their design of Northland Pines High School in Eagle River, Wisconsin. What makes this project really special is that it is the first LEED (Leadership in energy and Environmental Design) gold certified high school in America.
Gold Standard Certification means that the school must meet extremely stringent standards for water use, energy consumption, recycling of building material and overall environmental impact.
The school and design company originally hoped to achieve the Silver Certification, and would have been the first school in Wisconsin to do so. However, once that was achieved in-time and under-budget, the team decided “why not go for gold?”
The school cost approximately $29 million dollars, is 253,000 square feet in size, and houses 600 students. The building itself will feature an atrium,lots of natural light, clean air monitoring, water-saving toilets, sinks and urinals.
The school opened for the 2006-07 academic year.
