Remodel your Home the Eco-Friendly Way

by Brian Yalung on Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Home remodeling has to be one of the common things that most home owners would consider doing. But the problem is how to go about it. Cost is one area of concern but equally important these days is how to be able to remodel with eco-friendly responsibility as well.

So where would you get these ideas? From reading home design magazines or perhaps home design shows that offer mostly eco-friendly remodeling ideas from the materials to be used up to what items you may want to place today.

“I figure we save at least 50 cubic feet of landfill per kitchen,” said Crook, who has been refacing kitchens for six years and started Eco Kitchens in March. By replacing only doors and drawer fronts, covering the cabinet boxes with veneers and adding a few new cabinets if necessary, Crook figures each project also saves at least one 45-foot-tall, 50-year-old tree.

Refacing has been around for years, but the environmental benefits resonate with homeowners today, he said.

  • Another great option for a "green" cabinet is the Koch & Co Green Series cabinet.

Their cabinet box is constructed from a no-urea-added-formaldehyde, or “formaldehyde-free”, particleboard manufactured from wheat chaff fiber particles rather than tree fiber particles. There is wide array of finishes available with low-voc-emitting stains and they can do a natural topcoat with a no-emitting-formaldehyde-voc finish. Thus, you have a product that is rapidly renewable, has no formaldehyde in the adhesives and panels, and has low-to-no VOCs in the finishes.

Koch is manufactured in Kansas and has a dealer base across the Midwest and Western US. If there is not a dealer in your area, you can contact me at (847) 917-6300.
