Welcome the New Year without the Fireworks

by Brian Yalung on Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

It has been tradition to some countries like the Philippines to outdo one another as far as showing off fireworks displays to see who has the best way of celebrating New Year. New Year’s Eve can be typified to a war zone in the Philippines and apparently, the aftermath is a dark cloud that marks once New Year’s Day comes in.

Filipinos are accustomed to popular firecrackers, mostly because they make the loudest noises. But through the years, a lot of people have fallen prey such as losing fingers and suffering serious degree burns in the process.

Hopefully with the help and advice of the EcoWaste Coalition, this should serve as a good alternative for people who are emphatic about celebrating the New Year with an eco-friendly reminder on how to stay safe and keep the environment sane as well.

Instead of firecrackers, the very enthusiastic and imaginative students dished out emission-free, zero-waste sounds from tambourines fashioned out of bottle caps, maracas from tin cans, cymbals using pot lids, and shakers from plastic bottles, juice packs, soap and toothpaste boxes filled with seeds, coins, and pebbles.

  • Some cultures have their own belief on why they are celebrating as such, but this doesn't mean that it is correct. I think it is good that the Eco-Waste Coalition is helping them to change their old ways to have a safe celebration of New Year in the Philippines.
