Welcome the New Year without the Fireworks
It has been tradition to some countries like the Philippines to outdo one another as far as showing off fireworks displays to see who has the best way of celebrating New Year. New Year’s Eve can be typified to a war zone in the Philippines and apparently, the aftermath is a dark cloud that marks once New Year’s Day comes in.
Filipinos are accustomed to popular firecrackers, mostly because they make the loudest noises. But through the years, a lot of people have fallen prey such as losing fingers and suffering serious degree burns in the process.
Hopefully with the help and advice of the EcoWaste Coalition, this should serve as a good alternative for people who are emphatic about celebrating the New Year with an eco-friendly reminder on how to stay safe and keep the environment sane as well.
Instead of firecrackers, the very enthusiastic and imaginative students dished out emission-free, zero-waste sounds from tambourines fashioned out of bottle caps, maracas from tin cans, cymbals using pot lids, and shakers from plastic bottles, juice packs, soap and toothpaste boxes filled with seeds, coins, and pebbles.
