How To Green Abandoned Homes

by Missy on Monday, March 9th, 2009

In Muncie, Indiana several abandoned homes are being transformed into sustainably affordable homes.

The idea is instead of tearing the vacant houses down, build upon the good foundation that each home has and create a home that is energy efficient and sustainable.

This is the brainchild of Ball State University and the City of Muncie. Under a joint collaboration, the two aim to take seven abandoned homes and add roof solar panels, energy efficient appliances and recycled flooring. The obstacle, or should I say challenge, is funding. The students behind this project at Ball State are working on securing grants to bring their idea to fruition. Iif they succeed, the seven homes would become models for other states in implementing this idea.

As the students themselves declared, “GREEN is hot right now” and they are hoping to greencap, a/k/a capitalize on green and bring affordable eco friendly homes to Muncie.

Someting tells me they will succeed.
