SIGG In Nasty Controversy Over BPA In Bottles

by Missy on Monday, August 24th, 2009

Just got wind that Swiss bottle maker SIGG is in a nasty controversy over BPA in their water bottles.

It seems that SIGG has been doing some mis-marketing of their products, specifically their very popular water bottles. From what I gather on this very lengthy article, it appears that SIGG has been letting the public think that their water botttles are BPA-free, while all along not being entirely truthful.

sigg bottles eco and not so eco

There are apparently two versions of their water bottles out, one with a copper looking liner which does leach BPA and a newer eco version which is suppose to be BPA-free. I think this boils down to bad PR and bad handling of a big out of control situation. If someone is paying extra to purchase a product which does not contain something they feel is harmful, and the product is being labeled and marketed as such, then it would be outrageous a situation once the customer finds out. Which is pretty much what is happening currently at SIGG. There are lots of disappointed (and some very angry) SIGG customers out there now, who either want their money back, an apology or both.

Read the article linked above for lots of detail on exactly what took place, when, where and how angry customers feel about the matter.

This isn’t going away anytime soon for SIGG, a massive PR battle lies ahead for the giant (and popular) Swiss bottle maker.
