Eco-Friendly Shipping Technology
Yesterday, Holland America announced plans to launch a test mosel of a saltwater air-emission scrubber on the Zaandam in June.
The project will explore the potentials of scrubbers attached to the ship’s engines as a means to reduce carbon emissions. It is hoped that this technology can be expanded for all salt-water cruise ships and commercial ships.
The Province writes
The sea-water scrubber, developed by Krystallon, a subsidiary of oil giant BP, uses the natural chemistry of salt water to remove sulphur from the engine emissions bubbled through it.
The firm claims the calcium carbonate in the water renders the sulphur harmless by converting it to sulphates and neutral salts. After being scrubbed of particulates, the water is shipped back overboard.
The scrubbers would not work in fresh water and would therefore be unusable on Great Lakes ships.
This seems to be a very interesting project, whose science is very much over my head!
