Encourage Kids to Walk to School

by Brian Yalung on Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Depending on your location or area, enticing your child to walk to school is certain to draw various points. One of which is safety. It is indeed a mean world out there and as a parent, one can just imagine how a parent would worry a lot, not knowing if his or her child was able to arrive in school safely.

But today, it all depends on how you also educate your child. Avoiding the dangerous streets may be a good contribution towards providing an alternative on transportation issues and rising cost of fuel. Besides, it has been proven that a child may encounter a 40% greater risk of incurring a vehicular accident compared to walking on the side.

This is certainly debatable but considering how many cars we see in the streets together with the reckless drivers out there, there is a chance that this statistic is indeed a fact.

a child faces a 40 times greater risk of being killed in a car accident while being driven to school by a parent than of being molested while walking, bicycling or taking a bus to school. Factor in the pollution you’re generating, the physical activity you’re thwarting, and the money you’re spending (money that might otherwise go to your kid’s college fund), and you might argue that chauffeuring your children to and from school is downright reckless parental behavior!
