Have Your Tried Eco-Friendly Cigarettes?

by Brian Yalung on Friday, November 28th, 2008

Tobacco and cigarettes have long been considered a problem for people who want to put a stop towards pollution and of course health risks as far as smoking is concerned but many of you are bound to get a kick out of this. Ever heard of an eco-friendly cigarette?

Apparently officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Singapore Customs (SC) seized 2,016 cartons of “eco-friendly tobacco”. Now that would be a first for them and though they had doubts on the claims, after proper scanning, the claims were found to be consistent.

On Nov 24 at about 7.45pm, an inbound Malaysian-registered truck declared to be conveying disposable food containers and wrapping films pulled into Tuas Checkpoint and was directed for radiographic scanning.

The officers found the scanned image to be inconsistent with the declared consignment.

While this may seem to be a new discovery, the legality of it all was the one put into question. Smuggling is a grave offense and it carries certain penalties.

Upon conviction by the court, first-time offenders of cigarette smuggling can be fined up to a maximum of 20 times the amount of duty evaded. For second or subsequent convictions, offenders can be jailed for up to two years, as well as being fined. The offenders also face further fines based on the amount of GST evaded.

The vehicles used in the commission of such offence are also liable to be forfeited.

Singapore Customs warns that buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, having in possession or dealing with contraband cigarettes are serious offences under the Customs and GST Acts.

The public are strongly advised not to buy duty-unpaid cigarettes. For possessing a packet of duty-unpaid cigarettes, an offender may face a minimum fine of $500 or prosecution in court

  • What is it that is eco-friendly about these smokes? I can see the packaging being eco-friendly, but would the smokes not still pollute the air when you smoke them.
  • $500 for one pack? Does anybody ever checked your cigarettes? I don't think so. But eco-friendly smokes made me laugh :)
  • I don't think its 500/pack dude......more like a 500$ fine!
  • What eco friendly tobacco and cigarettes is available in markets! Many peeople are addicted of these products. It will greatly reduce level of green house gases and hence global warming. If you might please name the brand and companies! Thanks for post.
  • Yeah, I know. But what if I had only 1 pack without proper label and it can cost me 500$. How much cheaper are illegal smokes?
  • The must be pretty bloody cheap if people are willing to smuggle them with such hefty fines attached!
  • Roo
Dunno about the claims here, there is little detail about the actual product, more about the fines associated with tobacco smuggling.
There is one company I know of that makes Organic tobacco products - Natural American Spirit from Santa Fe. They also make non-organic tobacco, without the addition of all those chemicals usually added to tobacco. Another brand of tobacco without chemical additives is Pueblo.
Though I've never seen either of these companies claim their products are eco-friendly, I'm sure they have better claims to the title than the products in this story!
  • A few weeks ago a friend and I spontaneously decided to take a walk at Land's End (in San Francisco) that would take a couple of hours. So we needed some drinking water. The closest stop was a 7-11 on the way. We walked in and right to the back of the store to the refrigerated beverage case. They had about 20 different types of bottled water. My friend selected one in a matter of seconds. I stood there for what seemed like 15 minutes examining each one and declaring things like "that one comes from too far a distance to be sustainable" or that one is made of so called bio-based plastic that will contaminate the bottle recycling since there is no place to compost it where we are going, etc., etc. My friend began to complain that I should "just choose one!" So I finally actually bought an attachment for my large, lightweight stainless steel water container. This small decrease in decision-making in my future will simplify my life just enough to save me a few brain cells for something else.
