Thermal Activated Roof Tiles

Here is something that many home owners should consider. Much of the electricity costs we have to deal with is connected to temperature needs of a home. And normally, roof tiles would be assigned one color only that of which is black most of the time. But thanks to some MIT students, a new kind of thermal activated roof tile which changes their color based on temperature.

In their white state, the tiles reflect about 80 percent of the sunlight falling on them, while when black they reflect only about 30 percent.” This would translate into about a 20 percent saving on cooling costs in the summer.

The only thing holding this back is funding. It’s a neat idea but the thing is they need to be commercialized to really gain some headway to the consumer market.
