Environmental Activist Sentenced to 4 Years for Burning Down Horse SlaughterHouse

by Missy on Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Jonathan Paul, an environmental activist, today received a 4 year sentence from an Oregon judge for his involvement in the firebomb of a horse slaughterhouse and meat packing plant in Redford, Oregon back in July of 1997.

He was one of 10 that were tried and convicted since 1997 for various arson jobs across several states. Jonathan was part of a radical environmental cell of Earth Liberation Front called “The Family”.

In the picture above he is shown in happier times, with his sister, author and former San Francisco firefighter Caroline Paul. It is the only picture i could find of him.

What do you guys think of his sentence?

First of all, Mr. Paul was never part of "the Family" a name invented by the government. He also was never part of the ELF, he is an animal rights activist. He didn't even know most of his co-defendants.

The arson Mr. Paul was involved in was over 10 years ago and since that time he has devoted his life to helping others - humans and animals - working as an EMT and firefighter. The horse slaughterhouse was never rebuilt and over 500,000 horses would have been killed there in the last 10 years if the business still remianed. The slaughterhouse was also owned by the Belgian mob and employed immigrants at below minimum wage. The community complained about he blood clogging the sewers and sounds of horses screaming all day long. This was a business that never should have existed.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, Mr. Paul should have received 32 months, not 51. But this case is political and about stopping so called "eco-terrorism". It is time that the true eco-terrorists, those who destroy the planet with impunity, are stopped.
