Fitness Goes Green
Eco-friendly exercise is increasing in popularity. People are hitting the trails, not the treadmills, climbing on real rock walls instead of plastic ones, riding real bikes instead of stationary bikes, and all sorts of other eco-activities.
However, there are two side effects to this boom. One is that eco-friendly fitness consumer products are in demand. You can get vegan friendly, organic, fair trade — name your choice of social and environmental consciousness and you got it — exercise gear, clothes and equipment.
Alternatively, increased use of the outdoor facilities means the environmental impact of these places increases, resulting in faster erosion, more degradation and an increase in irresponsible use.
The Vancouver Sun wrote a really interesting article about this phenomenon today, in the wake of prepping for the 2010 Winter Olympics. I suggest you check it out here.
