Fruit Could Make Powerful Fuel
A new study suggests that the sugars found in fruit contain more energy than ethanol. If harvested efficiently, they could be converted into a powerful and renewable fuel source.
BBC writes
It is called dimethylfuran – it can store 40% more energy than ethanol, and does not evaporate as easily.
The scientists say that fructose can be obtained directly from fruits and plants or made from glucose – but more work needs to be done to assess the environmental impact of this new fuel.
The researchers claim that we already have the technology needed to produce this fuel efficiently, effectively and in the quantities needed. Researchers believe that within 6 years, all of Britain’s biofuel will consist of this new fruity fuel.
