Robinson Crusoe Island Tops “Must Save” List
A group of British scientists working for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust recently compiled a list of regions which we mst save in order to preserve the earth’s biodiversity.
First on the list? Chile’s Robinson Crusoe Island and the surrounding Juan Fernandez Archipelago. “Practically all of Chile is a top spot,” Stephan Funk, one of the study’s co-authors said, “because its geographic isolation has facilitated the evolution of a diverse and unique group of species.”
The Juan Fernández Archipelago is too small to have any native mammals, reptiles or amphibians. However, it has eight native birds, including the red hummingbird and, more importantly, 101 of the islands’ 146 native plants occur nowhere else in the world.
The entire list of the world’s 100 most vulnerable eco-regions will be published soon!via santiago times
