Too Many Kids Can Be Bad for the Environment

by erin on Sunday, July 15th, 2007

A recent study by the Optimum Population Trust suggests that families should restrict their child-bearing to a maximum of two children. More than that, they argue, will have negative environmental effects.

The study simulated an 80-year life span and calculated that the average UK child will create the equivalent carbon footprint of 620 return flights to New York. This doesn’t even include the carbon footprints of that child’s offspring. They believe that the world does not have enough resources to support the current global population growth. Having no more than two children is less than the total required for successful biological reproduction (i.e. natural selection type-stuff), should result in the eventual tapering off of the world’s population.
