Ammonia for Archaea

by Brian Yalung on Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Arachea Ammonia OxidationJust when we thought that ammonia was purely used for bringing us back to our senses, an ecological study recently showed that it serves as an energy source for archaea, one of the three main branches on the tree of life. For the record, bacteria and eukaryotes such as plants and animals are on the other two branches.

They may be considered as bugs but thriving on ammonia as an energy source is really something that people forgot to note. We all know bugs are part of the eco-system and the study made by the University of Georgia is only one of the many findings that researchers can truly discover if they put focus on such areas.
