Chicago Farmers Market, First in Illinois To Accept Food Stamps
As read on a sustainable blog, there is a farmers market in Chicago, the Logan Square Farmers Market, that will be accepting the use of food stamps. A first for the state of Illinois.
Wow! who knew, that besides Chicago, there are quite a few farmers markets that already accept the use of the debit food stamp card, Link. I just wonder how many folks who are on this assitance are regular or even irregular farmers market patrons? And more so, how many know that they can use their assitance card to buy produce there?
According to a spokesperson for The Department of Human Health in Chicago, the idea and promise behind this new program, is “to make home-grown farmers produce really accessible” to the poorer residents of the state.
I do believe this is good news, i just wish it were more publicized and/ or promoted within the communities where it is most needed.
