Understanding the Allee Effect

by Brian Yalung on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Allee EffectThe perspectives involved in properly determining related areas of ecology include that of identifying the relationship of population with the corresponding growth rate in a certain region. While we are all aware that there are some areas where we would usually have population control problems, the essence of it all is that existence and survival is entirely dependent as well on how the proper reproduction and survival of individuals can be done.

The Allee Effect is not entirely familiar with most of us. As elaborated by Wikipedia:

The Allee effect is a phenomenon in biology named after Warder Clyde Allee, who first wrote extensively on it. It describes a positive relation between population density and the per capita growth rate. In other words, for smaller populations, the reproduction and survival of individuals decrease. This effect usually saturates or disappears as populations get larger. – Ailee Effect, Wikipedia

The fact remains that beings cannot entirely exist without proper mating between creatures. This is the reproduction process that is very important in establishing growth density among species. Hence next time, it would be best to understand that the inability to control population growth may be a problem, but leaner ones will all the more be a problem for species to exist.
