We are all fully aware that plastic used as a main element for packaging will offer a lot of problems but if this concept by David A. Edwards can prove that it is effective and safe, perhaps there is a chance that companies may get a new alternative as far as eco-friendly packaging is concerned.
This comes in the form of the WikiCells which consists of edible and biodegradable packaging which can be peeled off from items it would be holding. After being peeled off, they can be eaten or composted.
Edwards’ concept would put a very thin natural food membrane around liquid or solid food items. The membrane is held on by electrostatic forces and can be easily peeled off. Inside the membrane there could be another, slightly more robust edible shell to protect the edible item within.
But the thing here is would they be safe to eat. While the packaging may be sterilized upon production, storage and external factors come into mind.
