Global Warming Threatening Heritage Sites

by erin on Thursday, June 7th, 2007

For the first time in history, the World Monument Fund included heritage sites that are being affected by climate change on their yearly list of the 100 most endangered sites.

The 2008 list includes:

  • Scott of the Antarctic’s hut, which is being threatened by heavy snowfall
  • site-1.jpg

  • Herschel Island in Canada, which is becoming victim to rising sea levels and melting perma frost
  • site-2.jpg

  • The Chinguetti Mosque in Mauritania, which is being lost to desertification
  • The oldest part of Leh in Ladakh, India, which is being affected by modernization and the fact it is very fragile and cannot withstand heavy rainfall
  • To check out the entire list, the World Monument Fund has a neat interactive map!
