"Big Belly" Bins Reduce Waste

by erin on Friday, June 22nd, 2007

These bins use solar energy to activate the crusher that can reduce the amount of waste inside up to five times. This reduces the number of trips required by garbage collectors, resulting in fewer carbon emissions.

Torbay is the first municipality to install these £3,000 each bins on a trial basis. They plan to introduce more if they are useful!

“We must be able to think outside the box and be willing to try new ideas. The council has already planned a major clean up drive in Torbay this summer targeting street cleaning, graffiti, public toilets and litter. We hope that this latest trial will compliment the work whilst also helping the environment,” said Cabinet member Jeanette Richards said.

Hopefully they are worth their hefty price-tag!
