5 Easy Ways To Go Green On The Weekends

by Missy on Friday, July 31st, 2009

There are many ways to take it easy on the planet. Maybe you can’t afford solar panels on the roof or go out and buy a 2010 Toyota Prius. Who can!

But have no fear, as you can go out and live a simpler and more planet-friendly life. And since we spend most of our time at home on the weekends, I thought it fitting to write a piece on stuff you can do to make it more eco friendly.

As usual, let me know what you think in the comment area.

1. Eat in – how about preparing a scrumptious meal for the family based on local organic ingredients you scavenged from your neighborhood farmer’s market. This is a great way to keep the family together while also being planet-friendly, not too mention having a heck of a great meal.

2. Recycle – If it’s feasible in your area to recycle, start a family weekend recycling program. Get the kids involved and make a project out of it. You can even reward the kid who in a week ends up recycling the most cardboard, paper, styrofoam, bottles, or cans, etc. Make it a friendly family competition.

3. Rent a Video – The idea behind this one, is instead of hopping in the car and going to the show, how about renting a video instead. Your local video store is probably alot closer to your home than the movie theatre, and they could use the business. Keep that money in your community as much as you can, it will come back to you ten fold.

4. Ride A Bike – Bike riding has soared in popularity in the last year or two and for good reason. Why? Because it’s just about as zero-emission as anyone can get when traveling around. And it’s just plain fun. It’s also fantastic exercise, and just in case all that isn’t enough incentive for you. Guess what else is awesome about biking? It’s totally free. (assuming you have already have a bike, of course) There’s no cost to you or your family to don some bike apparel, strap on some bike helmets and take a jaunt around town.

5. Visit A Neighbor – Yeah, you know like they use to do in the old old old days. If you happen to be buddy buddy with a neighbor, why not make a date out of it and pay him or her (or them) a visit. Bring your favorite board game, a nice bottle of wine and a GREAT big smile. It might be the best time ever. If not, well visit another neighbor. You get the point, keep it local keep it real and most of all – keep it fun.

Hope you enjoyed my top 5 easy ways to go green in the weekend.

Even better than recycling; Save money and the Earth and be clean at the same time. Get serious and add Bathroom Bidet Sprayers to all your bathrooms. Available at www.bathroomsprayers.com with these you won't even need toilet paper any more, just a towel to dry off! It's cheap and can be installed without a plumber; and runs off the same water line to your toilet. You'll probably pay for it in a few months of toilet paper savings. And after using one of these you won't know how you lasted all those years with wadded up handfuls of toilet paper. Now we're talking green and helping the environment without any pain. As for water use a drought is always a concern and must be dealt with prudently but please remember that in the big picture the industrial water users always far exceed the water use of household users and in the case of toilet paper manufacture it is huge. The pollution and significant power use from that manufacturing process also contributes to global warming so switching to a hand bidet sprayer and lowering your toilet paper use is very green in multiple ways.
