Surely many of you folks will say that you are smarter than a sixteen year. Well maybe for a couple of teenagers. But for this Turkish student Elif Bilgin, there is no denying she is brighter at the moment thanks to her breakthrough – turning banana peels into bioplastic.
Studying the starches and cellulose components of the outer layer of bananas, Bilgin was able to come up with materials that can insulate wires and form medical prostheses. She was able to come up with a certain kind of non-decaying bioplastic which should be a good move towards the direction of addressing pollution and waste concerns.
For her efforts, Bilgin was awarded a top prize of $50,000 at the Scientific American Science in Action competition and also becoming one of the finalists for the Google Science Fair.
