When Jen’s basement flooded, she was told she’d have to replace her carpet - but with enough research she found a company that professionally dried and cleaned it, then reinstalled - saving her a bundle of cash and saving the dump from a bundle of carpet.

This is one example of carpet recycling and or upcycling. Who is Jen? Jen is a co-founder of Ideal Bite, a daily eco newsletter that covers green tips and resources. The focus of today’s tip is carpet, what to do with it when we no longer need it, or in the case of Jen above, when a flood strikes.

There are many uses for old carpet, one such idea mentioned on Ideal Bite, is re-using that carpet and making a series of household cat scratchers, floor mats, and floor runners. Some non-profits (such as Habitat For Humanity) will accept gently used carpet, so if this is the route you want to take, be sure to find one near you.
