Pens with caps would normally be considered as trash once all the ink in them is used. Normally they are made of plastic, body and cap, which if you come to think of it would be another contributor to the growing plastic waste issues that we have yet to resolve.
Plastic recycling is of course something many have turned to. We have seen some made into works of art while others using them into some functional furniture piece. But for Maison Martin Margela, tons of these pen caps were prime materials in making this jacket which is currently on display at the Museum Rotterdam.
Assembled from hundreds of blue Bic pen caps strung on cotton ribbon, the jacket will join Werkstij (“work style”), an exhibit that examines the intersection of function and fashion.
