New York City is taking growing green to every aspect of the city. Streets throughout the city, in all five boroughs, will be paved with recyclable materials soon.

Additionally, the Staten Island Ferry may switch to biofuel, said Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.

“We want to switch to cleaner, greener ways of doing business,” she explained. “To green a great metropolis in all its glory is to be a model for the nation.”

The pavement plans will include using a mix that consists of 40% recycled concrete. One asphalt plant already produces this combination and another is expected to be built soon. At the second plant, recycled materials are expected to be the majority of the asphalt content.

The city is also making plans to make bicycling in the city safer and more accessible.
