Black Bears Might Be Spared This Year In England

by Missy on Friday, September 5th, 2008

The Royal guards in London, England are considering alternative fabric for their guardsmen hats than black bear.

As reported on green celebrity blog Ecorazzi last week, a letter by a well known British comedian was sent to the Prime Minister, urging to consider an alternative to black bear fur.

It currently takes one black bear for every hat worn by the Buckingham guard. 50-100 new hats are needed every year.

Every year $600,000 is spent on procuring hundreds of black bears for their fur, and then used as hats. How appalling a practice?

This isn’t just a matter of going green, this is an economical and ethical dilemna. Surely there are less expensive methods than hunting and killing black bears for……A GUARDSMEN HAT. There are loads of other less costly (and more humane) fabrics than Black Bear Fur.

With today’s technology just about any fabric can be turned into something luxe. Vegetarian designer (and British royalty herself) Stella MCartney might be commissioned for an alternative. There has to be another choice.
