Green Restaurant Association, Helping To Build an Environmentally Sustainable Restaurant Industry

by Missy on Sunday, August 12th, 2007

While reading the blog for Bella’s Cookies, a vegan and organic all-natural cookie shop, i learned of the Green Restaurant Association. (to read my piece on Bella’s Cookies click here) The GRA is not new, it was established in 1990 and its aim is to create a venue for new or existing restaurants to learn how to incorporate more eco-friendly ways of doing business.

The environmental organization is a national non-profit and focuses on helping restaurateurs with: research, environmental consulting, education, publicity, marketing, community organizing and consumer activism.

They also publish the green restaurant guide, which lists certified green restaurants. As of this writing, there were 129 dining spots listed. In order for a dining eatery to reach certification, they need to meet the standards listed below.

Certified Green Restaurants™ must meet the following standards:

  1. Use a comprehensive recycling system for all products that are accepted by local recycling companies
  2. Free of polystyrene foam (”Styrofoam”) products
  3. Commit to completing four Environmental Steps per year of membership
  4. Complete at least one Environmental Step after joining the GRA

Visit the GRA to learn more about their mission and to find a certified green restaurant in your town.

  • I was so excited to find your site, Keetsa! and to read about the Green Restaurant Association!

I have been in, around and writing about the restaurant business since 1967. In those 40 years, I have never seen anything quite like the "Big Belly" for solving so many restaurant trash problems. Moreover, to be able to solve these noxious problems in a "green" way sure made a heckuvalot of sense to me when I heard of this invention.

I highly recommend it to anyone in the food service industry that wants to be part of the SOLUTION not part of the problem.

    Cheers,

    Roy
