Dutch Researchers Growing Eco-Friendly Meat

by erin on Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

I know that one of easiest ways to reduce your ecological footprint is to go vegetarian. The energy and resources that go into a plant-based diet are far less than those that go into a meat based-diet. But if you are anything like my boyfriend, going veggie is a tough, tough task.

Luckily, a Dutch-based research team is looking into that. They are in the process of developing a method to produce eco-friendly meat in a laboratory.

The China Post writes

“We’re trying to make meat without having to kill animals,” Bernard Roelen, a veterinary science professor at Utrecht University, said in an interview.

Although it is in its early stages, the idea is to replace harvesting meat from livestock with a process that eliminates the need for animal feed, transport, land use and the methane expelled by animals, which all hurt the environment, he said.

“Keeping animals just to eat them is in fact not so good for the environment,” said Roelen. “Animals need to grow, and animals produce many things that you do not eat.”

The thought of eating a meatless-meat is scary. But then, i think tofu-dogs are scary. Regardless, if it means that those carnivores out there can reduce their ecological footprint without giving up the steak they love, who am I to complain?!
