The California Institute of Technology just got a big shot in the arm for their solar powered toilet system thanks to the Bill Gates Foundation. Apparently the foundation handed them a generous $100,000 to continue their work on self-contained, sun powered system that will reportedly recycle water while also transforming human waste into storable energy.
Gates is banking on the project to deliver a new kind of toilet that will become a vital cog to improve health in developing nations. Statistics show that open defecation results in sanitation problems which cause 1.5 million children under 5 to die annually.
A solar-powered toilet is seen to be a more feasible solution, the reason for their pledge and support with the hopes of helping out in an ecofriendly and healthy manner.
