Hybrids Powered Via Solar Roofs

by erin on Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Here is a neat idea: using a solar panel to power-up the electrical part of your hybrid car. If only I had been the one to come up with it! Solar Electric Vehicles did first, though.

They can add solar panels to the roofs of hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius, and it lets them operate for up to 20 miles a day — improving their energy efficiency by 29%.

It’s a little pricey initially — $2000-$4000 depending on your vehicle’s make and model –  but Solar Electric Vehicles says that the expected payback time is only 2-3 years. That’s pretty good!

It looks sleeker than the solar powered car in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, doesn’t it?!

  • I actually like that roof. Now hoping more people will buy a Prius.

Yes, I am guilty of owning a non-hybrid vehicle. But when I can afford it, I will have to switch to a Prius or something that's more eco-friendly.
