Silicon panels are a great way to solicit solar power from the sun’s rays. But like most, there are limitations as far as capacity and efficiency is concerned. But with these new black silicon solar cells, the new material can reportedly double the efficiency of solar cells to harness perhaps the full power of the sun.
Credit goes to the scientists over at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany for the Black Silicon. The said silicon was made possible by irradiating regular silicon with a laser under sulfuric conditions.
The silicon integrates the sulfur into its composition after being treated with the laser pulses, giving the substance its characteristic black color. By changing the shape of the laser beams, the researchers were able to overcome one of the most common problems of working with silicon.
Reportedly already in production, these new black-covered silicons could reportedly increase solar power efficiency by at least 1 percent.
