Solar Powered Road Studs

by David Allen on Friday, January 16th, 2009

Road stubs have been traditionally been made from glass beads set into a rubber casing, these are often damaged and do not the job anymore which is potentially dangerous. Which is why solar power and LED lights could quite easily take their place at some point, provided that the technology and cost can be partnered correctly?

One such application by a company known as Luna Road has already managed to produce a system that uses solar power to charge up the light. It takes around eight hours of daylight to produce enough power for twelve hours. Because these are lights rather than reflectors, the safety of road users is increased.

  • Very interesting, I hope that they will still work in the winter.
  • Great use of solar power, too bad we can't use these in New England.
  • Yup, this is way better then fluorescent paint. I think that in Germany they have a similar system, where the lights are actually placed on the road. Although I am not sure how do they power them.
