Grad Students at MIT Propose Alternative Energy Plan

by Missy on Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Grad students at MIT are wanting to harvest the energy produced from the walking of large crowds gathered at malls and other high traffic areas, to create an alternative energy source.

AutoBlog Green writes:
“they want to harness that energy by building in a generating system tied to the vibrations of the floor. As people move around the individual energy is small but when aggregated it could potentially produce a significant amount of power”

Novel green design idea and one that hopefully would propel Congress to create funding initiatives to support such newfound concepts in science and energy.

The traffic idea looks like a good one, but highway traffic of trucks and cars seems like a better source to me.Just stand neer any major highway and you'll see what I meen. Some mayjor highways are buissy 24 hrs. a day.

I work in renewable energies and this idea of harnessing and converting the vibration from floors, busy highways, roads, etc. to accumulate & produce energy sounds fantastic. There are some highways whose heavy traffic is 24h and makes to vibrate everything around. This is waste energy that can be used to produce electricity.
