Solar Bags Made From Recycled Wind Sails: Sakku

New line of eco friendly solar bags have hit the market. Sakku Solar Bags aside from harnessing the power of the sun to juice up electronics and gagdets, is also made using recycled wind sail material.

This is great for many reasons, first instead of having the wind sail cloth end up in landfills, it is re-used and re-purposed into something useful and funky. The solar recycled bags are currently only available in the UK, but plans are in the works to bring them to the US.

The designs naturally turn out well, and each bag comes with a tag outlining the origin of the wind sail cloth. So you will know exactly which boat it came from, and abit of trivia behind it. Pretty neat.

Post Office Offers Free iPod Recycling

Post offices across America are now offering free iPod and gadget recycling for FREE to all. Everything from cell phones, MP3’s, to inkjet cartridges will be properly disposed of for you.

Simply go to a participating post office, ask for the recycling envelope, and then drop in your used or old electronics. Yes, the trial run is only available in certain states, including L.A, San Diego, and my hometown, Chicago.

recycle-your-old-ipods-at-post-office.jpg

This project is courtesy of a joint partnership between the U.S. Post Office and a recycling company called Clover Technologies Group. This is impressive considering the costs involved in designing and implementing a concerted nationwide recycling program.

The easier it is to recycle, the more apt people will be to do it. I’ll keep tabs on the trial run and report new findings and news. Hopefully many electronics will be recycled through this program, and saved from the landfills.

Solar powered planes

Before you start worrying, of course solar panels at the moment could not actually produce enough power to enable the plane to fly, but this system from Powerenz will produce enough power to enable the pilot to carry out his pre flight checks.

solar plane

By using this system planes will save on fuel and therefore make flying better for the environment. It is a surprise that some of the larger airlines do not use something similar, but maybe now it will begin to catch on.

Electric producing revolving doors

What a great idea this is, you look at a normal revolving door and by adding some fairly simple turbine type workings, and all of sudden you have a human powered electric producing machine.

humanpower

After the initial cost then every time somebody enters the building they are producing free electricity for the building, which will cut the operating costs of the running of such a large place.

Keeping an eye on your power

This is a great way to keep an eye on your power consumption, this has a clear display which will show exactly how what going on, it will display the power output, and the costs are also displayed in how much it is costing per hour, day, week, month or year.

eco eye

You can also get a breakdown of the carbon emissions too as no matter how careful you are there is always a lot of emissions being made no matter how green you are or how frugal you are about the use of electricity.

Pull the plug t shirt

Get the message out there and tell everyone to “Pull the plug”.

pull the plug

Its amazing really that we leave the electrical items plugged in and on standby, never worry about it, but there is some cost as these device still draw on power even when they are turned off, although it is not as serious as the fire hazard that plugged in electrical items are.

By the way, every year in the US consumers spend around $5 billion powering up items that they are not using, now that’s crazy! Pull the Plug.

New plug saves power

There is a great idea that will save power when lights and other electrical items are left on standby, this will then save power and money for the user.

power saving plug

This smart plug will has a sensor built in which is able to detect when the devices are in use and if there is anyone in the room too. Could this be glimpse into the future where we are able to leave everything on and it will automatically turn it self off when there is nobody around?

Old TV’s worth $100

Now that sounds a lot better than carting the old television down to the dump, well maybe it should do because you will still have to take your old TV set down to the dump, but once there you will get a voucher for $100 off of a new Sony Bravia HD TV.

sony tv

The deal will start from March 15th 2008 and what’s good about this, is that the set that you are taking back doesn’t have to be a Sony either. So is this a good green deal from the Japanese electronics giant or just a green ploy to make people that they are getting a good green deal.

A solar table

This is a great idea for being outside away from the house and when you are unable to run a power lead up to where you are sitting. But with this table all that changes for it is covered with solar panels and has storage batteries too.

sun table

The table will produce enough power the keep the batteries fully charged, but you can run a TV, DVD player, Laptop or anything else that you want to use outside, this is really brilliant, you could up to three hours of laptop use and two hours of powering the TV.

Naturally this sort of technology does not come cheap and this table will set you back about $3,600.

Rating the E-Waste Manufacturers

Electronics Recycling

While technology is having its way with getting all the attention from all its gadgets released in the world today, the matter of ranking their environmental waste duties is still important. A lot of the leading manufacturers are aware of the need for green standards and it would be best to see how they rank.

For some, it may not be important with regards to their social responsibility towards being green conscious. But the thing is, we all have to be aware of where they rank for the reason that it is not only for the world but for our safety as well.

(Source) Companies that received low scores on the Green Scorecard provide little or no information on the toxic materials found within their electronics products, or such products contain uncommonly high levels of such materials, according to Greenpeace. Low scores can also be a result of a lack of effective product takeback and recycling efforts on the part of companies.

Nokia in Greenpeace’s bad books

They used to be the good green people claiming first place in the green electronics but that is old news because they have slipped right down to ninth place and it is mainly to do with the company’s failure to support its recycling claims.

nokia

Greenpeace sent into Nokia dealers, mobile users who wanted to recycle their phones and yet the dealers know nothing about the program in Argentina, Philippines, Thailand, Russia, and India.

greenpeace

The way that Greenpeace operate this scheme is not solely on recycling, it takes in consideration many factors, including materials used in manufacture and production process itself.
