To be highlighted on the Eco-Eatery Tour, a restaurant, café or bar must meet at least 3 of the following criteria:
• Offers Organic, Seasonal Produce and Organic/Biodynamic Beverages
• Offers Sustainably Raised/Wild Fish and Meat
• Practices Fair Trade Policies (including the selling of Fairly Traded Items–wines, coffee, teas, etc.)
• Vegetarian and/or Vegan Friendly
• Uses Biodegradable Take-Out and Delivery Supplies
• Grows Own Food and/or Utilizes Local Farms
• Recycles and/or Composts
• Supports and Utilizes Alternative Energy and Uses Energy Efficient Appliances
• Builds & Furnishes with Recycled and Renewable Materials
• Uses natural, non-toxic, chemical free cleaning supplies and for pest control or uses integrated pest management (IPM)

The next eco eatery tour is planned to be held at The Green Table on September 22nd, from 7pm to 9pm.

The Green Table is a green restaurant located in NYC, known as an organic, locally sourced, seasonal, and vegetarian friendly eatery and wine bar. Voted as Best Green Cuisine by Organic Style.

Through micro loans Kiva is able to fund mini entrepreneurs in developing countries, via donors who come from all over. When you visit the Kiva website, you will come across a variety of causes to support, and most if not all, can be funded with a small amount of money.

The way it works is you look around the site, and find an entrepreneur who catches your heart, look up their profile and cause. You then register with Kiva, and align yourself with said cause. You donate as part of a group, so if the cause you want to support needs $750, your share could be as little as $25.

This is a fantastic opportunity to lend a hand, without buying anything. The money raised is given directly to the small business owners, and you are sent reports detailing the progress of your small loan. Yes, it is a loan, you are repaid at certain agreed upon terms.

We read them on newspapers, run into them at websites and even get some unsolicited email for certain promotions. But the thing is, are they truly green compliant and worth every penny.

Cute eco friendly retailer, Soul Matters, based out of Ottawa, Canada features eco friendly clothing and accessories and is new in the town.

 

The outside of the shop has an old world charm to its decor and is small enough where one would get good personalized service. The shop retails a good mix of green wares, including fair trade tea by Numi, bamboo yoga clothes made out of renewable resource Bamboo, book and DVD’s.

Investigations into the awful child labour conditions in India have thrown up GAP as one the companies that are using these companies who exploit young workers who can be as young as ten.

They were caught red handed by an investigating team from the Observer newspaper from the UK.

However GAP has denied all knowledge of this practice, and so they feel cannot be directly held responsible for what sub contractors do, but they are not pleased to be involved if only indirectly to this sort of operation. Naturally the head office of GAP is probably completely unaware of this, but is that a good enough excuse?
