10 (More) Green Office Tips:

1. Use a mug for coffee and a tumbler for water.
2. At meetings, present on PowerPoint instead of passing out printed packets.
3. Print on both sides of the paper.
4. Instead of throwing out one-sided, non-confidential printed documents, use them as scratch paper.
5. Use silverware instead of plastic utensils.
6. Recycle empty, clean yogurt cups and use them for paper clips, staples, pens, etc.
7. Don’t use screensavers.
8. Turn off bathroom lights when not in use.
9. We have a mini-library where employees bring in magazines they’ve finished reading at home and we all share them during our lunch break. Old magazines are then recycled.
10. We also recycle empty, clean Lean Cuisine type food trays for our maintenance guy to use when he does paint touch-ups.

With offices accounting for a large part of global warming and emissions, making our workplaces a little greener can’t hurt. Every small step helps and contributes to conservation efforts.

Political Campaigns On Energy and Fuel

As far as focusing on their campaigns are concerned, there will always be the issue of global warming and eco-friendly issues governing the world today that will be included in their platform. On whether we like it or not, it can make a difference as far as understanding who is pulling our leg and who is planning to make a difference.

Fuel prices are soaring and alternative measures are needed. But a good planner will always determine where all of this is coming from. Barack Obama for instance, has focused on alternative energy and we all know how much hybrid and electric cars are being wooed as the better alternative.

For John McCain, looking for solutions to the oil problem is indeed commendable. But eventually it will point towards Obama’s way. Now that is good planning and McCain better find a quick antidote for this.

Nuclear Power: Energy for the Masses, but at a Cost

Nuclear Power Alternative?

The search for alternative energy solutions continues. As the world is looking to help address the rising cost of energy, as well as analyzing the effectiveness of current energy sources, we also need to determine whether we have sufficient enough sources to satisfy the world’s need for energy. While many are turning towards the usual hydrogen, solar and wind power solutions, another energy source, nuclear power has recently been inserted into the fray. But the real question is, would it do more good than bad?

We all know what nuclear power brings. It can provide a great solution for our energy needs, but a tentatively dire expense to our health. In fact, if you think of the nuclear disasters endured in the past, such as the nuclear disaster at the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 and the near-disaster at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, they are reason enough to strike nuclear power from the list of acceptable non-fossil and carbon energy sources.

So, at the moment, where do we really stand? Do we conserve or simply continue to be ignorant in order to meet our demands?

One thing that is for sure, relying solely on nuclear power will be suicide. We have a lot of problems already as far as climate change and global warming is concerned, and with the possibility of another disaster, might push us to the brink of extinction.

CupDepot Makes the Global Warming Awareness Shift

Karat

For a company that has been known to produce the usual plastic cups and utensils, it doesn’t take a genius to tell you that you have to start looking at eco-friendly alternative. One good way to do that is to change the materials of your main products to which CupDepot.com has done.

Their focus has now shifted to the eco-friendly products through Karat Earth, a new and eco-friendly brand of the company. They are made up of renewable resources such as corn oil and are biodegradable. They are also 100% compostable thus setting the road towards eco-friendly practices by this new brand line offered by CupDepot.com.

All eco-friendly products manufactured by CupDepot.com are derived from a 100% renewable resource, corn, as it is now used as the main ingredient in the production of eco-friendly products such as biodegradable cups and other plastic wares. Completely biodegradable and 100% compostable, CupDepot.com’s eco-friendly products are made of PLA, an eco-friendly alternative to non-biodegradable plastics. These eco-friendly products are similar in quality to traditional and non-biodegradable plastic wares. They have the same clarity and sturdiness, and are odorless and non-allergenic. The main difference is that the eco-friendly products are derived from renewable resources and completely decompose under commercial composting conditions in just 45 to 60 days.

Consumer Goods Wrapped in Bio-Plastic

Bio-plastic wrapped man

Most consumer goods and products these days come in various types of wasteful packaging such as cartons and plastic. With the ever evolving eco-consciousness of the world, these products have consistently been identified as one of the leading contributors to global warming, particularly in the area of waste management.

Ordinary plastic cannot be disposed immediately. While a consumer throws it to the nearest garbage can, it does not end there. Its final stop is at the trash heap where it may sit there for exasperatingly long period of time before they can be properly disposed of. Not to mention that this process, in itself, can be an unhealthy process.

Today, there is a new, healthier way of packaging through the use of recycled cardboard and bio-plastic. Of the two, the bio-plastic shows the most promise. It is made from corn and seems to be the bio-degradable answer to the future of product packaging.

Customers and retailers are on the hunt for alternatives to plastic, which spends centuries sweating inside landfill or working its way down the throats of remote seabirds. Faced with these realities, bio-plastics - made from agricultural sources such as maize or corn - must seem like the packaging equivalent of a knight in shining armour.

Bio-plastic takes less energy to make and in doing so generates less carbon dioxide than regular plastic. It’s derived from renewable sources and is also biodegradable and even compostable given the right conditions.

Envirofit Cook Stoves

Envirofit Cook Stoves

In a world where you have to cover practically anything under your wing and do your part in the whole global warming process, India’s Envirofit offers eco-friendly cook stoves to cut down the pollution in homes. Now here is something pretty much welcome for women who love to cook a lot.

The first country to get a crack at it, assuming that they get the BIS certification, would be India. The Envirofit Cook Stoves are built of durable, high-quality material and engineered to suit the cooking habits of women today. Once they hit the market, expect a cleaner and healthier living indoors and lesser pollution issues in the process.

Envirofit is a US based non-profit corporation that designs, manufactures and markets world-class engineered technology products to improve the quality of human life across the globe.

Built of durable, high-quality material and engineered to suit the cooking habits of Indian women, the Envirofit cook stoves are a result of over five years of research and testing in coordination with institutions such as Colorado State University.

The cook stoves are currently available in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and will be introduced in other states shortly. They are available with single pot and multipot cooking options. The cook stoves are currently awaiting BIS certification.

The G8 Summit is More than a Gathering

Electric Cars at G8 Summit

As we all know by now, the G8 Summit at the summit’s International Media Center in Rusutsumura is underway and to create the right impression and mood, don’t think that this event is simply about debating and discussing the governing problems the world has to deal with today as far as climate change and global warming is concerned.

On hand as well are some eco-friendly ideas and gadgets that are placed to get attention. Also, what better way to address the G8 summit than to use eco-friendly fuel cell buses and hybrid or electric cars.

A social worker of Rusutsumura, who took a test ride in the car, said: “It was so quiet and comfortable. Compared with my regular small car, it was a paradise.”

Another vehicle available for test driving was Toyota’s Personal Mobility i-Real, a lithium ion battery-powered vehicle that operates something like a chair on wheels, with cruising and walking modes.

Constructed based on the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) principle, the International Media Center itself incorporates such environmental technologies as a snow cooling system, solar panels, green walls and other materials.

With that said, hopefully we can get something productive and ideal out of it all.

Ships May Break into North Pole this Summer

North Pole

We all know for a fact that climate change and global warming issues are still in the air and while many are trying desperately to save what is left of our world, you just have to face facts. Summer is just around the corner and this means another wave of heat and warm days ahead.

Up in the North Pole, this may be bad news. The continuous melting of the polar ice caps may soon allow ships to pass through, totally annihilating the once impossible land filled with ice. But if you think you can pass through and see the polar bears or penguins up close again, think again. They may have drowned already by the time you can get a ship to pass there.

The potential landmark thaw - the first time in human history the pole would be ice-free - is a stark sign of global warming, according to an article Friday on the web site of the The Independent, a London newspaper.

“Symbolically it is hugely important,” said Mark Serreze of the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado. “There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water.”

Oil Prices and Global Warming

Global Warming and Oil

Both these occurrences, global warming and the continuing oil price surge have been economic catastrophes that most people have to deal with. It has been getting harder to live in this world today and apparently each effort seems to be getting futile by the day. With these things in mind, where does the government fit in?

There are two ways to look at it. One is to see how government can benefit from it. Additional taxes and of course connecting them with global warming for a justifiable declaration. No one would bother to check in depth although the economists would do their own pencil pushing.

The other is of course the hands-off policy to which the government will wait for everything to settle and then make its move. Either way, the government will benefit while also taking credit from it once the worst is over for these two dilemmas besetting us today.

Our government is jumping aboard the global warming bandwagon in a big way. Ignoring any facts to the contrary, they continue to fuel a juggernaut that will result in more government, more taxes, more ‘crises’ and more useful idiots. Even Republicans are on board, with John McCain turning green with a twist guaranteed to garner liberal votes. He’s proposed a ‘cap and trade’ system (called redistribution of wealth) to help battle climate change. It used to be only liberals who had the hubris to think man can control climate.

Japan: The Least Eco-Minded City

Japan Least Eco-Friendly Country

We all know that a lot of cities in the world today have a lot to learn and do to be able to cope up with the eco-friendly measures that are being required to combat global warming. But you will be surprised at how this city would come from a country that is known to be at the forefront of it all… Japan.

Japan has long been known as a vital contributor towards contraptions and gadgets that help combat global warming and apparently they have forgotten to implement these measures on their own turf. Call it an act of being tactless, this is simply a big blow considering that people of a leading country where most green technology originates is the one who does not even give a hoot about global warning.

Japan may be at the cutting edge of green technologies, but its capital has the least environmentally conscious residents of eight of the world’s richest cities, a poll showed.

More than four in 10 Tokyo residents — 41.6 percent — said they “don’t want to sacrifice a convenient lifestyle to prevent global warming,” according to the poll results published recently by Japanese advertising agency Hakuhodo.

The Eco-Friendly Side of Spa Treatments

Natural Serving Spas

All of us need a break some time and we will most likely find ourselves heading towards the nearest spa for that much sought after relaxation through spa services offered today. While others find them a vice they can live without, there are spa establishments that provide you with the natural way of reviving your senses through the use of treatments such as a Blueberry Manicure which is offered by the Cliff House Resort and Spa.

Most spas use these natural means of providing service as an ally towards their own little way of contributing towards global warming. We see a lot of them around and it would be best if we check out what they have to offer since it is all really for our benefit.

More than 28 percent of spas nationwide use local ingredients, according to a 2007 survey by the International Spa Association, a trade group for the industry. Last year, after seeing the trend take off, the association started tracking how many of the 3,000 spas in its membership use ingredients from local nature in treatments.

Soot Reduction can Help Improve Global Warming

Black Carbon Soot

As far as global warming is concerned, it is often associated to a lot of things from weather to waste and pollution. One well-known pollution generating issues is soot or black carbon. Soot is produced by burning coal, diesel, wood and dung which causes can really smell bed and worst, cause a lot of problems as far as putting a cuff on global warming issues we have today.

There are calls to control the black carbon issue. Many of us know that there are alternative ways to be able to control waste and help stop global warming in this aspect. All it needs is really more of looking for alternatives and black carbon is definitely one of them.

Soot produced by burning coal, diesel, wood and dung causes significantly more damage to the environment than previously thought, two US researchers have found. Black carbon could cause up to 60 per cent of the current warming effect of carbon dioxide, making it an important target for efforts to slow global warming.

The Blue Alert By Greenpeace

Greenpeace

Some may call the Blue Alert by Greenpeace as fictitious but it can happen if our current situations are any indication. Global warming works both ways. It is melting the ice caps and also causing problems as far as trying to survive the abnormal temperature we are experiencing anywhere today. With due emphasis on the first issue, the continuous rise in temperature can be likened to melting ice in our refrigerators. Every year there is a 5 degree increase in temperature and if the polar ice caps are any indication, it is not only the creatures up there who will have problems. All of us are.

Ice turns to water and once that happens, we can see that the very land we are stepping on will slowly be whittled down due to excess fluids. So with nothing to step on, where do we go? So if you see the polar bears and penguins up there having nothing to set foot on, just wait a couple of years more. You may find yourself in the very same situation.

According to a report titled Blue Alert by Greenpeace, if present trends are any indication, there will be a five-degree increase in temperature over the next hundred years.

This will submerge large areas and displace around fifty million people in India alone. A policy change, the report says, can still avert a two-degree rise in less than a decade.
