UK schools failing to teach green living

Despite being part of the national curriculum the body that is charged with checking over schools Ofsted has recently been carrying out a study into the important subject of green living. The government are looking that all schools should be sustainable by the year 2020, the idea being that the teaching staff and the pupils limiting the impact that they have on the planet.

However there is no real directive which blankets the whole educational system through the country. What is needed is a coordinated approach to the subject and action plans developed in order for this to work properly.

Working out the Dream Green Homes

Eco-Friendly Home Living

We hear about green living these days and while most of us tend to want it because it is the fashion trend of eco-friendly living, a lot has to be said with regards to how we should go about building green and eco-friendly homes. By eco-friendly living we of are course referring to the type of home environment that we have starting from raw materials all the way to the type of stuff we have inside our homes which include appliances and furniture.

Eco-friendly is not all about having organically made stuff or even buying products from an eco-friendly approved company. The manner of living as well is important which covers the area of conservation and using alternative means that include recycled products that can take the place of high costing consumer items that really give us more problems in the end rather than solutions.

So what do we need for eco-friendly compliant green homes? Here is a good article on Green living written over at Newsday.com.

Peach Pit Flooring

Peach Pip Flooring

Peach pip or pits can really serve more rather than finding their way in the trash chutes. Put your imagination and creative mind to work and you will come up with good designs that can improve your homes. In this case, peach pit flooring can bring something new and elegant as far as improving the overall home design you currently have.

Glued onto a surface with a silica sand and resin mixture, this peach pit flooring offers a totally new dimension as far as applying an eco-friendly touch towards homes that are gearing towards the green compliant standards most people are taking up today.

Peach pip floors (aka peach ‘pit’ floors to us yanks) have a long history in South Africa and the warm, natural materials made an early impression on South African gallery owner Allah le Roux. He caught his first glimpse of this unique organic finishing technique as a child on a visit to Klein Zoar in Cape Town. Decades later, in 2004, he bought an 19th century house in Paarl, in the Western Cape, and made his first objective to restore the home with this traditional peach-pip flooring.

Pulling Back Global Warming Through Green Housing

Green Compliant Homes

Many say that green home declarations are just tactics to close sales as far as the real estate and housing industry is concerned. Green standard compliance has been the rant of most demanding home owners today and apparently, people are falling to this trend as a means of securing their green homes.

Green homes have been pegged to slow down the pace at which global warming has been devastating the world. While the efforts are being united to fight global warming, this is what the housing sector can do for now; contribute by providing green compliant homes to put a stop towards the growing dilemma of global warming today.

Simply constructing more energy-efficient buildings—and upgrading the insulation and windows in the existing ones—could save a whopping 1.7 billion tons annually, says a new report from the Montreal-based Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), an international organization established by Canada, Mexico and the U.S. under the North American Free Trade Agreement to address continent-wide environmental issues.

Eco-Friendly Exercise Ideas

Eco-Friendly Exercises

Everybody is looking for ways to trim down and stay healthy. Apparently, this is not enough these days as people also have to consider the area of being eco-friendly about it. There are a number of ways people can achieve both. Ranging from a simple walk with nature or working out at home can achieve that health goal people always wanted.

People can achieve both if they put their minds into it. Here are some ideas to explain them more into detail.

  • Get outside. Electrically powered exercise machines at fitness centers and home gyms require a lot of energy to operate.
  • Unplug at home. If outdoor exercise is not an option, try creating a home gym using equipment that, again, requires you to generate the power. Some examples: dumbbells, tubing, kettle bells, jump ropes and self-powered cardio machines such as spinning bikes and rowing machines.
  • Dress the part. When choosing your workout clothes and accessories, consider those made of organic cotton, bamboo or other natural fibers — even coconut shells! You could also look for clothes and shoes made of recycled materials, such as sneakers with recycled rubber soles. (Green coloring is up to you.)

Olive Oil in the Time of Green

    Olive Oil

We are familiar with olive oil. Other than being a health additive, it has a lot of other uses which most of us fail to realize. As far as using olive oil for the welfare of our bodies, it can be used as a good cleaner in our homes as well. It can even cure that irritating door which squeaks a lot due to rust and old age.

While there are a dozen other ways to use olive oil, here are some of them which can eventually be of big help to you or wherever you may be.

  • Prevent wax from sticking to a candle holder. Rub a thin coat on the base of the holder before inserting a candle. Dripped wax should peel away easily.
  • Care for your pet. Add 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon to your cat’s food to help prevent hair balls.
  • Moisturize cuticles. Apply a small amount of olive oil to the nail beds.
  • Treat dry skin. Rub a thin layer over the skin after a shower or a waxing.
  • Unstick a zip. Using a Q-tip, apply a drop to lubricate the teeth. (Avoid touching the fabric.) The zip should move up and down freely.
  • Dust wooden furniture. Apply a bit of oil to a cloth and wipe.
  • Silence squeaky doors. Lubricate hinges by applying a small dab to a cloth, then wiping the top of the hinges so that the oil runs down the sides.

    Wallet and Recycled Newspaper Comics

Did you read the funnies in this weekends newspaper? Well an artist in Los Angeles, has read the funnies and then taken them to make wallets out of it.

    recycled-newspaper-wallets.jpg

The wallets above are made from recycled newspaper, you get to choose whether the comic section or the finance section. How clever is this. The recycled newspaper wallets are also then plastered with soft but strong laminate to make them shiny and water resistant. These are made in the USA, in Los Angeles. Great gift idea.

The Brelli for the Next Rainy Days

    The Brelli

The rainy season may be a long way from today but it never hurts to get ready early. Rather than using any ordinary umbrella, why not consider this biodegradable umbrella called “the Brelli”?

“‘The Brelli’, a 100% biodegradable umbrella? Good riddance to deflated black umbrellas littering city streets or piling up in landfills and neighborhood refuse bins. The Brelli aims to introduce us to a new era of rain gear - one where the life cycle of an umbrella is something that we can finally rely on and also factor into the seasons ahead with a clear, eco-friendly solution.”

    Corn Plastic Coffee Mugs

There are a lot of coffee drinkers out there and most of us order our coffee from famous brewers such as Starbucks and Seattle’s Best. At homes and offices, we also turn to coffee as well to hit that spot. But as far as containers are concerned, we often look at disposable cups to store them which only add up to the increasing waste management concerns we have today.

Here is a good alternative for cups. The corn plastic coffee mugs is durable and eco-friendly and will surely be a good container to drink on in our next coffee break.

    Carrying Along our Green Passports

    The Green Passport
