Eco-Sensor Phones Brings Nokia to the Green

Nokia Eco-Sensor Concept

Nokia has added another feather in its cap as far as going green is concerned. Most companies today are trying to figure out a way to go green and Nokia, a known cellular phone giant manufacturer, has just offered the world another dimension towards green living standards by using recycled materials and offering an OLED screen to reduce power usage of these phones.

No pricing has been divulged but it is sure to be costly. This is only normal considering new mobile phones in the market are always coming out at expensive rates which eventually diminish over time.

It is pleasant to see that Nokia is stepping up with technology that will give it nurturing care to the earth. The Nokia Eco-Sensor is manufactured with eco materials combined with sensors that keep an eye on pollution levels. The phone uses recycled materials such as plant based plastics and 100% recycled steel for its casing.

The phone goes a step forward with pollution control by using an OLED screen to reduce power usage by the phone. The phone also checks the weather information by checking the humidity and Nokia plans a health version as well, which will monitor the heart rate. To add icing to the cake, Nokia has plans of inculcating a solar powered battery as well.

Eco-Friendly Carpets Made of Recycled Bottles

Plastic Bottles to Carpet

Here is an idea. We all know the growing concern for plastic bottles and rather than have problems on how to be able to dispose of them, why not recycle them into something useful in homes? Something like a great carpet from the recycled materials? Not a bad idea.

Mohawk Carpet does just that. It collects these used recycled bottles by the bale and then broken up, sorted, chipped, cleaned and then melted. After the whole process is finished, they are molded into threads and spun into yarn and later on made into the eco-friendly carpet.

Perhaps this can severely help in addressing the recycling problems of these plastic bottles. Not all people are aware of their use and with that, are a real problem as far as waste management is concerned.

Plastic bottles are a huge environmental problem. An environmental advocacy group, Food and Water Watch, says each year, the bottles used for water alone consume 47 million gallons of oil and generate one and a half million tons of waste. But the bottles are high quality plastic- that make great carpet at the same cost.

But Americans only recycle about one in four of the plastic bottles they use. Sadly, our landfills are carpeted with a solution that is going to waste.

The scrap yard tricycle

Now this is not really for riding on, although I suppose if you don’t mind the bumpy ride then I suppose you could, however I don’t suppose the police would feel that the front wheel was entirely safe!

scrapyard bike

This is classed as a work of art, and really should be treated as such; it makes great use of recycled materials that have been acquired from the local scrap yard.

It could be yours for a mere $5,000!

Norwich Increases Recycling Rates

Norwich Recylcing Practices

If we count the number of countries and regions in the world who have shifted and embraced towards recycling practices, we may find the numbers quite intriguing. While many have already undergone the said shift to help promote recycling to a certain degree, cities in the world like Norwich will surely be part of cited regions that have heeded the need for recycling products and reduces issues like waste.

Leading the pack of recycled materials include that of aluminum and plastic used usually as packaging for end products that people either consume or use. The packages usually lose their use once the contents are emptied and rather than leave them rotting, recycling measures such as coding and donating them to institutions inclined to do recycling prowess is a good thing to consider.

New figures released by Norwich City Council show it has collected 7,500 tonnes of rubbish to be recycled since April this year, pushing its overall recycling rate from 18.4pc in April to nearly 25per cent.

This has now put the authority way-ahead of its target to reach 20pc for recycling by March 2008.

Clothing made from bottles

Being green does mean that you have walk around in clothes from the seventies, you can buy some really up to the minute fashion that has been made from either reused or recycled materials.

ecowear

Take this jacket from Patagonia, their clothing is made from recycled materials, and this coat is actually made from a fabric that has been made from recycled plastic bottle. This is a great use for these bottles, which would have ended up in land fill.

Japan has all of the ideas

There are so many designers from Japan who are coming up with some terrific new and exciting ideas which although are eco friendly have not much in potential, I am not sure about this one.

eco office

It seems Japan has all of the intention but not much of the putting it into practice sort of idea. The office that is made out of totally recycled materials is just another example, while the concept is fine, but actually putting it into practice is just another thing.

I know that some great things come from concepts, but it would be great to see all of this talent go into producing some really great practical ideas.

Patagonia To Use 100% Recyclable Materials by 2010

Human-powered sports apparel company, Patagonia, has hired on an environmental specialist to look at operations and reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

 recycle-symbol.bmppatagonia-hats.jpg

Patagonia’s, signature material, is Capilene which is a recycled polyester. The shops have all instituted a shop-wide recycling program, called Common Threads,  wherein the clothes made of Capilene, can at the ends of its shelf life, be returned to the store, and dropped off (for free) into their recycling bins. Patagonia will in turn recycle this clothing and make new sportswear from it.  They have recently added organic cotton t-shirts, Polartec fleece, and Patagonia fleece to the list of recyclables.

Advantage: less virgin polyester (oil) is used. A good thing.

This is all part of the retailers goal of using 100% recycled materials by 2010. To find a Patagonia retailer near you, go to their find stores section.

Tully’s coffee ecotainer hot cup

The ecotainer will become the first totally compostable paper cup and will be available from Tully’s coffee stores.

Tully’s coffee ecotainer hot cup

Unlike other coffee retailers who merely use a small percentage of recycled materials in their coffee cups, Tully’s however have gone the whole way and brought in these cups and introduced composting facilities too, which is great for the cups and any waste food too.

It’s great to see these companies coming out with innovative eco friendly ideas, rather than just doing enough.

Recycled Rice Bags Make Nice Bags

In many crafts circles, artists like to work with recycled materials instead of buying new stuff. Check out such an item, the Recycled Rice Bag which is made into a neat purse from a 10lb basmati rice bag, scrap fabrics, ribbon, piping, an old tee for the strap, spray-on sealer, and recycled sequins. Read the comments section for more great recycled craft ideas.

This bag is uniformly excellent.

Flowerpots made from fabric

This is a great idea for anyone looking for an alternative to the usual type of flowerpot. These Fabric Pots have a sleeve which when filled with soil becomes rigid and therefore stable enough to place a plant in.

The base is lifted off of the water tray, which stops the plant from sitting in a pool of water and some of the pots have a zipper, which allows the pot to expand, as the roots get bigger.

The base is made from recycled plastic and some of the sleeves are made from recycled materials too.

Fabric Pots are priced at $40.
