5 Tomato Fun Facts

Today at Groovy Vegetarian, my vegetarian blog, i wrote “5 Cool Trivia Tidbits About Tomatoes“. Little nuggets of trivia and or tidbits about one of my fave red veggies.

5 Fun Facts About Tomatoes!

1. Tomatoes used to be thought of as being poisonous, because a toxic alkaloid is found in the stems and in the leaves.

2. The cooked tomato contains lycopene and considered a preventative food for prostate cancer.

3. Outside of Valencia, there is a small village that holds the Tomatina Tomato Fight. Spain’s most popular festival, held each year.

Tomatoes were called the “apples of love” by the French and the “apples of paradise” by the Germans

There is a story that, because tomatoes were thought to be poisonious, a British agent tried to kill George Washington by putting tomatoes into his food during the American Revolution.
