Brazil Looks at Ethanol as Energy Alternative

by erin on Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Brazil announced plans recently to attempt to double their production of ethanol over the next ten years. With the wake of increasing oil and gas prices and demand, and with the declining supply, Brazil hopes it can develop and sustain a bio-fuel industry to provide an eco-friendly fuel alternative in the coming years.

“Brazil has already consolidated its position as the agriculture supplier of the world,” said Andre Nassar, general manager of the Institute for International Trade Negotiations in Brazil. “Now I think the Brazilian government sees ethanol as an instrument to make other countries pay attention to us, as a supplier of both food and energy.”

Over the past few years, Brazil has focussed on developing its agricultural industries. Their exports to China grew 22% between 2005-2006.

“Brazil owes its [position] to long-lasting and continuous research efforts toward technology in growing tropical crops. With ethanol, it is the same,” Decio Zylbersztajn, an agricultural economist in Brazil observed.
