No More Seafood For You By 2048?
Have you heard or read about the seafood calamity that ecologists are predicting by 2048?
According to an article published in the Journal Of Science in 2006, seafood as you know it, will simply not be around by the year 2048. This claim comes about after a series of scientists and ecologists performed a 5 year study on various fish species, and came to the conclusion that we don’t have sustainable fishing practices.
The 14 researchers from Canada, Panama, Sweden, Britain and the United States spent four years analyzing fish populations, catch records and ocean ecosystems to reach their conclusion. They found that by 2003 — the last year for which data on global commercial fish catches are available — 29 percent of all fished species had collapsed, meaning they are now at least 90 percent below their historic maximum catch levels.
In order for the fishing system to survive long term, we need to change our practices and fast. I believe it is as usual we are too greedy in the acquisition of things, and as such, are going to be left without in the future. Conservation is the name of the game with this matter, and many others like it. We all need to do our part to use less resources and conserve what we currently have.
